The General Manager of KVIA was kind enough to provide us with the Comscore adult audience figures for the newscasts of six local television stations for the period between October 30, 2023 and November 26, 2023, for all newscasts between 4:00pm and 10:30pm.

The last time we shared these ratings, in May 2022, two local news networks complained to Comscore that we were divulging their data in violation of corporate policies. Apparently they did not want their ratings revealed to the public.

We want to assure you that we sought and received formal permission to share the attached chart from the Senior Vice President of the Commercial Division of Comscore.

Here are the results, which are plotted on our chart:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

  1. ABC-7             26,831
  2. KFOX 14         10,608
  3. CBS 4              8,375
  4. KTSM 9            7,834

SPANISH LANGUAGE

  1. Noticias 26     11,563
  2. Telemundo 48  4,387

Among English-language networks, KVIA dominates, with an average of 26,831 viewers for its 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm and 10:00pm newscasts.

KTSM-9 came in dead last, with an average of 7,834 viewers among its five evening newscasts. It is the only English-language network that does not have a top-rated newscast for any timeslot.

Between the two Spanish-language networks, Univision had an average of 11,563 viewers compared to 4,387 for Telemundo 48.

The reason why KVIA continues to dominate its competitors is because they provide the highest quality content. Under General Manager Kevin Lovell, and now Brenda De Anda-Swann, KVIA has built its brand into a major media force in our region.

KVIA has always placed a premium on solid investigative reporting and has sought to hire anchors and reporters who know how to file open records requests, analyze City and County data, critically examine important issues, and ask tough questions of politicians.

Their competitors often cram their newscasts with weather reports, car accidents and murders while uncritically parroting the talking points and press releases of local governments and elected leaders.

We wish to extend our congratulations to KVIA for serving as a watchdog against abuses in the City and County, forcing to politicians to go on the record, and insisting on substance rather than appearances.

We sincerely hope the other networks will hire more investigative reporters and improve their content.
