Minerva Torres-Shelton served in the US Army in military intelligence before working for the El Paso Police Department as a patrolwoman in downtown El Paso for five years. She then joined the FBI, where she had a very distinguished career and held various leadership positions while managing large budgets and administrative units. Her job included sending agents undercover in order to expose and dismantle human-trafficking rings. We are impressed by her commitment to law enforcement and steadfast determination.

Her opponent is Escobar-backed candidate Oscar Ugarte, who supports sending social workers into domestic violence situations and gun buyback programs. He was supposed to resign from his position as constable when he announced his run for Sheriff but the County made an exception for him. He began as a Socorro police officer but then spent most of his career as a bailiff and constable. In our view, he lacks the right experience and is contaminated by a progressive agenda.

Ms. Torres-Shelton is accepting no endorsements since her strategy is to appeal to the people directly without seeking the input of politicians.
