Today the County voted 3-2 “to sign a memorandum of understanding establishing a non-binding collaborative framework with the City of El Paso and the Downtown Deck Plaza Foundation for the development of the potential Downtown Deck Plaza.”
The vote was carried by County Judge Samaniego, who will face Republican Minerva Torres Shelton in November, and two commissioners who were just voted out of office by their constituents.
Commissioners Iliana Holguin and Michelle Butler dissented. Holguin is a staunch fiscal conservative who generally opposes wasteful projects whereas Butler opposes the project on the grounds it would not be “equitable” for those who live far from downtown.
Liberal gobbledygook aside, we are glad Butler joined Holguin in voting “nay.”
Tomorrow the City Council will vote on the same MOU.
