The City of El Paso continues to promote the narrative that City Council voted for a lower property “tax rate” in August when in fact they voted for a significant tax increase.
Every July, the State of Texas provides our local taxing entities with updated property valuations and then they set their tax rates accordingly.
If the City, once it receives the new valuations, sets its new tax rate above the no-new-revenue tax rate (provided by the State for guidance), it is increasing our taxes.
That is exactly what they did.
The City set a lower tax rate than last year in order to compensate for increased property valuations but they did not set it low enough to prevent a tax increase.
The Mayor and his allies on City Council deceive us by bragging about a lower “tax rate” while our effective tax burden increases.
This disgusting behavior should be a crime punishable by a prison sentence but in El Paso it is politics as usual.
Enjoy your day.
