According to the City webpage, the Facilities and Fleet Maintenance division maintains over 180 buildings and 2,500 vehicles. The division has 130 employees and oversees an operating budget in excess of $30,000,000.

An insider provided us with the following eyewitness account:

“Another huge waste of money is the Maintenance Department. When I started back in 2008, they did everything I needed at our facilities and put in the work orders. Over the years, 80% of the work became outsourced. An employee puts in a work order, say, for a plumbing issue. Maintenance comes out to the site, checks, ‘confirms,’ then says they’ll come back. Then a few days later, again. They call to say “x” company will be coming by to fix the issue. So the salary of the maintenance staff was wasted for him to come and ‘see,’ then they pay an outside company to do the work, and don’t think these companies are cheap. There is no such thing as ‘the lowest bidder’ for these jobs… all while they have the Maintenance Department just sending someone else to fix issues.”
