Odette Rosales of the El Paso Chamber, Angelica Rosales of Sundt Construction, and Eddie Trevizo of El Paso Electric are the Directors of The Sun City Coalition, Inc, a 501(c)(4) that just funneled $63,744.57 of dark money into four City Council races.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines dark money as “money contributed to nonprofit organizations (especially those classified as social welfare organizations and business leagues) that is used to fund political campaigns without the disclosure of the donors.”
Why would the donors wish to conceal their identities rather than contribute directly to the candidates, which would require disclosure of their identities?
Because this way they can fund lies and half-truths without revealing their role in dirty campaign advertising.
Their pro-Chavez mailer claims she “cut taxes,” when in fact she voted to increase taxes twice while in office, for FY 2026 and FY 2027.
Their anti-Canales mailer claims he “voted to raise property taxes 4 times in 4 years,” when in fact he voted to increase them only twice, for FY 2026 and FY 2027.
We consulted an attorney specializing in campaign finance and were told that lying on campaign mailers is legal in Texas.
However, it is also legal for us to out the Directors of the 501(c)(4) and expose their agenda, which is to support incumbents Alejandra Chavez, Ivan Nino, and Art Fierro and oppose incumbent Chris Canales.
