Our local Oligarchs at first hesitated to contribute to Matthew Guzman because he is rather unknown and has not lived long in El Paso, but they soon realized he is the only candidate for District 8 who will support their nefarious tax-and-spend agenda.
No one should be surprised that the former Secretary of the Downtown Debt Plaza Foundation, and fanatical supporter of large “capital improvement” projects, just raked in $10,500 from Lane Gaddy, Douglas Schwartz, Martha Hunt, Kelvin Kroeker, Miguel Fernandez, Kelly Tomblin, Johnny Escalante, Dee Margo, and Ted Houghton. We can see these contributions under item 13 of Tuesday’s City Council consent agenda.
Tomblin is the President and CEO of El Paso Electric. Ted Houghton is the loudest voice in El Paso for freeway expansion and the Debt Plaza. Dee Margo was the worst and most unpopular politician in recent memory and presided over hundreds of millions of dollars in non-voter-approved debt issuances for the benefit of his country club friends. We obtained Guzman’s last doorhanger, which promotes his support for small businesses and entrepreneurs, reforming the permitting processes, updating zoning and land use regulations, and other innocuous positions.
What you will not see on his doorhanger is his support for the Debt Plaza and other boondoggle projects, which will require additional bonding and tax increases, to the detriment of El Paso taxpayers.
Why is Guzman hiding his most important reason for running for City Council? Because the Debt Plaza is less popular than the Black Death of 1348!
Guzman has two well-funded opponents: incumbent progressive Chris Canales and fiscal conservative Arturo Allluin.
