In the questionnaire she submitted to the El Paso Times, incumbent City Rep. Alejandra Chavez of District 1 claims she has never “been in arrears on local, state, or federal taxes.”
However, when she filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 23, 2009 because of the financial failure of her restaurant Thyme Matters, reporting $777,608 in liabilities and only $53,573 in assets, she was in arrears $2,531 on her property tax. Martin Paredes of El Paso News provided us with the bankruptcy filing back in September 2024.
Thus, she lied outright to the media, like so many other dishonest El Paso politicians.
Of course, Chavez previously worked as a Risk Analyst for the Enron Corporation, which went bankrupt only days after she resigned in November 2001, with several of its administrators subsequently sentenced to prison for a range of felonies.
And now she manages our $1.4 billion municipal budget.
Is anyone surprised she voted twice to increase our property tax, by a total of 11.5% on the average-valued residence, and then lied about that, too?
