Renard Johnson is a liar of the lowest order and deserves to be recalled from office and run out of politics.
We invite you to listen to him bloviate shortly before the August 18 City Council vote to increase the property tax on the average-valued single-family residence by 6.0%.
Please make certain your stomach is empty or your dinner might end up on your lap.
Johnson claims the decision to raise taxes is difficult but it is the fault of the previous City Council (led by Leeser and Kennedy) because they insisted on NOT raising taxes in FY 2024 and FY 2025.
Of course, Johnson’s election campaign rested firmly on his promise to lower our property tax.
He broke his promise on August 18 just as he broke it the previous August when City Council voted to increase our property tax 5.2%. During his remarks, he doubled down on his lie from last year, again bragging about lowering our property tax rate for FY 2026, even though the spike in property valuations generated a major tax increase.
Thus, during Johnson’s first year in office our City property tax increased 5.2% and this year it increased another 6.0%. Combined, that is a double-digit increase!
He also promised to fix our streets and bring in more business. Yet the annual street budget remains only $10 million (of the $1.4 billion budget) and all the major businesses brought to El Paso since Johnson assumed office were the achievements of the previous Mayor and City Council.
Never has an El Paso mayor lied about so much in so little time.
Johnson concluded his remarks with “Whatever we do, we gotta get it figured out.”
