Minutes ago, the El Paso County Democratic Party voted overwhelmingly to oppose public funding for the proposed Debt Plaza over Interstate 10.

The resolution was drafted by Don Driscoll, Democratic Precinct Chair No. 70.

We interviewed him shortly after the Democratic Convention and he told us there were approximately 60 votes in favor and 10 opposed.

El Paso Democratic Chair Mike Apodaca attempted to modify the resolution to permit a public-private partnership in support of the Debt Plaza but got only about 10 supporters and was easily defeated.

In the March 3 primary election, 15,241 Republicans supported Proposition 1, opposing “the spending or commitment of tax dollars for the promotion, design, or construction” of the proposed Debt Plaza.

Thus, El Paso Democrats and Republicans are united in their opposition to committing public funds to this boondoggle.

As for us Libertarians, no vote is necessary since we fiercely oppose public funding for any project that is not a core function of government, especially entertainment initiatives.

At this point we can say the Debt Plaza has been shot down in flames.

Its remaining supporters remind us of the defenders of Macbeth’s castle in Act V of Shakespeare’s tragedy, besieged by enemies until the walls were breached and they were put to the sword.
