ADAM POWELL, EL PASO TIMES, SEPTEMBER 5, 2025:

“Max Grossman, a UTEP professor and outspoken critic of local government, has been arrested on a charge of family violence.

Grossman, who was a leading opponent of the proposed Downtown arena, was booked into the El Paso County jail on Friday, Sept. 5, on the charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence. His arrest stemmed from an alleged offense that occurred on Aug. 27.

Attorney Brian Kennedy is representing Grossman, court documents revealed. Grossman is currently an associate professor of art history at UTEP.

‘This ridiculous charge is absolutely unfounded,’ Kennedy said in a statement. ‘Our concern is whether it is an action taken to pressure Mr. Grossman in a child custody issue. We intend to completely clear his name.’

Grossman was released from jail the same day of his arrest after posting a $2,500 bond, jail records show.

An indictment has yet to be filed against Grossman, El Paso County District Clerk’s Office officials said.

A protection order requested by Grossman’s partner was issued Thursday, Sept. 4. The order requires Grossman to stop all communication with the woman, their child and his stepchild, the order obtained by the El Paso Times states.

Grossman also is barred from being within 200 yards of the woman’s house and her place of employment. He is not allowed within 200 yards of the children’s school and daycare, the order states. Grossman is also not allowed to possess a firearm.

The order remains in effect for at least 31 days.

GROSSMAN FILES LAWSUIT OVER CHILD CUSTODY

Grossman filed a civil lawsuit on Friday, Sept. 5, against his accuser, with whom he has been in a long-term relationship and who is now the mother of his daughter. Along with Grossman’s suit seeking full custody of his daughter, his accuser is facing a separate child custody suit related to her other daughter.

The lawsuit asks a judge to grant ‘temporary joint managing conservators’ to Grossman and the woman. It also asks that the temporary order ‘designate Petitioner (Grossman) as the conservator who has the exclusive right to designate the primary resident of the child.’

The woman has yet to file a response to the lawsuit, court records show.

A hearing date has not been set.”
