At exactly 12:29pm today, under agenda item 29, City Council voted 5-2 to place an item on the November 5 ballot that would cancel spending bond money for a downtown arena.
But where was Rep. Cassandra Hernandez?
She was conspicuously missing but came running into the room immediately after the vote, and then Mayor Leeser generously permitted City Council to re-vote the item so that Cassandra could be included.
The revised vote was 5-3.
It turns out Cassandra was playing hooky from work so that she could file for a place on the November ballot in order to formalize her run for Mayor.
Her filing is time-stamped July 30 at 12:29 pm, at precisely the moment of the vote that she missed!
Apparently her campaign filing was more important to her than voting on an issue with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars at stake.
And here’s the clincher. The filing deadline is not until August 19, so she did not have to miss the vote today, much less disappear from City Council.
El Paso deserves better.
